So... my manager in work today tried to basically convince us that money was useless and we don't need it etc. etc. Although he doesn't know my political opinions, I felt like most of it was mainly targeted at me.
So I replied: "I wholeheartedly disagree with you"
He replied: "Look John, what even is money?"
I replied the obvious answer "We have a fiat currency, so money is backed up by our confidence, our taxes, our economy, our government".
He replied "No, but what is it backed up by?"
I basically gave a quick re-explanation of a fiat currency...
He replied "It's gold"
I facepalmed onto the desk: "That was done away with after the financial crash/great depression in the 1930s. We no longer use the gold standard"
He didn't really understand, and then someone else turned round and basically backed me up realising that I was right. So instead of admitting he was wrong and ending his drivel, he just repeated the first point he made, and I was sooooooooooooooooo tempted to turn around and say "Why would we listen to you when you thought we still used the gold standard?" - but he is my manager . I just ignored him and got back to work. Ironically I work in an accounting/auditing firm.
