No he wasn’t widely considered an awful president.
Sorry, I should have added - widely considered awful by anyone that knows anything about him.
Where do you want me to begin? As a character he was pompous and annoying, famously refusing to shake hands with visitors while he was in office.
The Hamiltonian policies that Washington favored really just emphasized special benefits for the rich and rich-born, and almost always sided with Hamilton on issues regardless of circumstance.
Washington had a needless authoritarian and ruthless side. He mobilized an army of 15,000 men to subdue the Whiskey Rebellion. Soldiers held a mutiny on federal hill to protest their terrible living conditions and their lack of pay for months, Washington had two of them publicly shot by firing squad.
Basically betrayed the revolutionary cause and principle as well as the French who helped us win the war in the first place with Jay’s Treaty
Everyone shlurps his dong because he was the first president and the face of the founding of the country - and I get that - but objectively he was a pretty shit president.
Never claimed he was a great general. My point was that he was a general and not a president.
